Event info:
An opportunity for both artists and industry professionals to gain valuable insights into when they should consider attending, or applying to play, music industry events. The panel will also cover how to make the most of the opportunities they offer, accessing financial support to showcase and what organisers consider when in selecting the acts they programme.

Following the panel, attendees will have the opportunity to socialise and to meet the speakers. DJ sets from Thomas Mackie and Hannah Macnamara (Regular Music) and Sarah Jones (Focus Wales).

NB - Ben Wynter (PRS Foundation) and Jamie Gilmour (Creative Scotland) will be hosting a pre-event briefing about funding for artists who are planning to play SXSW. This takes place from 1730-1900hrs. For details contact kitt@wideevents.co.uk

Born To Be Wide returns to Edinburgh look at all things vinyl, including manufacturing, releasing and how to make the process as environmentally friendly as possible.

The diverse panel includes perspectives from a musician, retailer, label-owner and production expert, who will also be taking a look at new developments in the market and product innovations. Confirmed speakers are Darren Yeats (VoxBox), Lisa Edwards (Key Production Group), Morgan Woods (Emme Woods), Euan Fryer (Athens of the North Records) & Karlyn King (academic).

Following the discussion, speakers will stay to socialise with the audience and tunes will be provided by guest (vinyl) DJs including Fresh Produce promoter, Tonia Todd.

Born To Be Wide launches in Dundee with legendary producer, author and musician Martin Atkins at Clark On Lyndsey Street on Tuesday 13 November. The night begins with former PIL, Killing Joke and Pigface drummer, giving a talk  How To Make An Extra $100k Next Year, drawing on his books Band:Smart, Tour:Smart and Welcome to The Music Business…You’re Fucked. He will also take part in a discussion focusing on two music businesses – featuring Kenny Gray from Dundee’s Make That A Take and self-releasing musician Emily Kelly from The Jellyman’s Daughter.

Following the panel, the teams from Creative Dundee and Le Freak Records will DJ playing their favourite records and the audience are invited to hang out and socialise.

Born To Be Wide is set to celebrate its 12 birthday on Thursday 4 February, with a self-help seminar specially for managers, artists and labels.

The evening, which takes place in Edinburgh’s Electric Circus, is the culmination of years of study and reveals the most – and least – effective approaches to promotion.

“This seminar will help unlock the many techniques within everyone’s grasp,” explains Born To Be Wide founder Olaf Furniss, who will chair the evening. “We guarantee that anyone attending will increase their chances of being covered and do a better job than most PRs.”

The seminar will cover themes including online promotion, social media, deadlines, creating an effective biography and how to get useable press photographs.  

Confirmed speakers include BBC Radio Scotland producer, Amy Ferguson, photographer Jannica Honey, concert promoter James Bruce and owner of Song, By Toad records Matthew Young.

Following the seminar, panelists will play a selection of their favourite music and hang out with the audience.
