Born To Be Wide in association with AIM presents: Label Evolution

  • The Pleasance (Cabaret Bar) 60 Pleasance Edinburgh, Scotland, EH8 9TJ United Kingdom (map)

Born To Be Wide returns for a special evening focusing on new record label models combined with the customary mix of socialising and self-indulgent guest DJ sets. Hosted in association with the Association of Independent Music (AIM), the event takes place on 1 November at The Pleasance in Edinburgh and features four short talks followed by a discussion and then an evening socialising to a random selection of tunes. Tickets are available here.

“The last time we did an event with AIM was in 2009 when Spotify was only a few months old, there was a lot of moaning about downloads and lots of record shops were closing,” says Born To Be Wide founder, Olaf Furniss. “These days new record shops are opening, download sales are declining and lots of people in Scotland are moaning about Spotify!”"In 2018, there’s no ‘one size fits all’ for music creators and labels. says Jude McArdle, membership manager for AIM, who will introduce the evening. “These are some great examples of people thinking ‘outside the CD' coming up with innovative ideas on how to build their business."

The Label Evolution evening is geared to provide insights and inspiration and begins with each speaker giving a short presentation on their business model and will be followed by a panel and questions from the audience.

Taking part are Euan Fryer, owner of Edinburgh’s Athens Of The North, which acquires the rights to vintage disco, soul and funk tracks, then uses these reissues to finance releases by new acts. He will be joined by Charlotte Spillerova from the Phases imprint, which is home to a roster of ambient and post-classical composers and focuses on digital platforms, as well as Charlotte Hazell label manager at London-based Killing Moon Records. The line up is completed by award-winning musician ShaoDow (DIY Gang Entertainment)

Advance Price: £6 / £5 (students)
